I am not old enough, but I help my parents with their accounts.
When you take a tIRA distribution when you are old enough, Vanguard will offer you the option to send you a check payable to a charity. The check will be written to the charity C/O you at your address. You send that on to the charity. My parents write a note asking the charity to please send them a receipt, etc.
The 1099 will not note that the QCD is tax exempt because Vanguard does not vet the charities. But you will have all the info you need for your taxes.
